In September of 2015 Central Scanning were approached by celebrated Sculptor Graham Ibbeson. Over the years Mr Ibbeson has created many sculptures including an array of famous characters.

We at Central Scanning had the great pleasure of scanning and 3D Printing his beloved statues of Laurel and Hardy which were unveiled in Ulverston, Cumbria by Ken Dodd in 2009.

Provided with an exact fibreglass cast replica of of the bronze statue of the late comedians, our team of Engineers conducted a course of scanning in our temperature controlled lab using the ZEISS Comet L3D 5m. Once fully scanned the team used software to fill in any minor holes found in the scan data creating a watertight mesh. With the scan data complete the team then prepared it for printing using our in-house Objet 3D Printer. This printer has a resolution of 16 microns, producing high quality and reliable models with a material structure that is ideal for casting use.

Which is exactly what Mr Ibbeson intends to do with his prints of the comedic duo. Printed at a requested size of 11 inches in length Mr Ibbeson will create casts from the figures in order to create smaller bronze replicas. By having his creations scanned and 3D printed by Central Scanning Mr Ibbeson has saved both time and money.

The prints were then carefully cleaned using a water jet cleaner ready for shipment to Lunts Castings Limited who would then use the prints to create bronze replicas.

When interviewed by the BBC for the unveiling of his statues Mr Ibbeson stated "I sculpted Stan and Ollie over a winter period a few years ago…when I took the cover off the boys every morning it uplifted my soul” and, we must say we had the same experience when scanning the jovial pair!
