A Shakespeare 3D Scan and 3D Print Project

April 23rd 2016 marks the 400th Anniversary of the death of one of the UK’s most famous writers - William Shakespeare.

In order to celebrate this special anniversary, Shakespeare’s Schoolroom and Guildhall, in collaboration with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, organised a special project to feature in the newly refurbished building and Central Scanning were involved!

Earlier in the year the company was approached by James Taylor of Wright & Wright Architects to 3D Scan and 3D Print a selection of historical objects including a religious seal impression, a guild cross and a commemorative plaque.

Being an important historical item the seal impression had to be scanned within the safe confines of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust building where it is kept.

With a large portrait of the Bard looking down at the proceedings, the impression was scanned using the Comet L3D 8MP 3D Scanning System. As dulling powder was not allowed to be applied to the delicate seal, the Comet L3D 8m was a great solution to easily capture a high resolution scan.

The team then moved over to Church Street to Shakespeare’s Schoolroom and Guildhall to scan a commemorative plaque dedicated to attendees of the King Edward VI school who had lost their lives during the Second World War.

This plaque was scanned using the hand-held Artec Space Spider Scanner to collect information on the text and frame profile to create a similar plaque.

An additional 3D profile of the Guild Cross was created using Delcam’s ArtCam software. This was created from a 2D profile provided to Central Scanning. This data and the data collected from both 3D scans was then used to create larger scale 3D Prints.

The prints, which were used for foundry patterns, were created using our in-house Objet Eden 500V 3D Printer.

The 3D Prints, including foundry contraction allowances, were then cast in brass by NewPro Foundry and supplied to Shakespeare’s School and Guildhall. These plaques will be on display within these buildings so if you’re visiting be sure to take a look!
